In the world where social media is the main source of advertising, there is so much exposure to what is “right” or what is “best” when it comes to hitting the gym. If being a gym girlie is on your list of things to do this year, watch out for the temptation to spend in areas where it might not be essential. This is a list of 7 things you do not need in order to be a gym girlie:
- A closet full of matching sets – this is sad, I know, because we do love a cute gym fit moment. Just remember that your average influencer has an exaggerated amount of gym gear. A few staples from a brand that you trust and fits the budget is really all you need.
- Greens powder – it has to be said. This is one thing that you absolutely do not have to spend your hard earned dollars on. You don’t even have to pretend it tastes good. Get your vitamins and minerals from a well balanced diet and leave the powder on the shelf.
- A bunch of random supplements – backpacking off the greens powder, there are so many supplements that are just not necessary when you are getting into a gym girlie routine. Yes, this includes protein, if you are just starting out and cannot afford to invest in protein powder/shakes, that is okay and not immediately necessary.
- To know everything – the gym is a place for growth, both physical and mental. You absolutely need a baseline of knowledge for form and technique, but can 100% learn as you go. Protect yourself and always proceed with safety in mind. It never hurts to ask for a spot or ask someone how to do something or improve your form.
- A specific physique / body type – you don’t have to lose 20 pounds before you start lifting. You don’t have to be the most shredded version of yourself in order to adapt to the gym girlie lifestyle. There is no one body size or type that means you are a gym girlie.
- To be a morning person – maybe worth noting that you definitely do not have to wake up at 5 AM to workout in order to be a gym girlie. The best thing you can do for your workout routine is find a time that is consistent for you. A time when you are well-rested, energized, and well-fed will ensure you get the most out of your time in the gym.
- A gym membership – you might be surprised how much progress you can make starting out at home or in your apartment gym. Sometimes a gym membership is too much of an investment, especially if you are still not as consistent with your workouts as you would like to be in order for it to be worth it. Don’t let this be the thing that stops you from reaching your physical health and wellness goals this year!
I know that list might include something you thought you needed. It is okay if you still choose to invest and/or get those things. The most important thing to consider when it comes to being a gym girlie is what is sustainable for YOU!
